The Condensed History of the Bharatiya Janata Party

The long article by Mr. Malkani titled-"History of the Bharatiya Janata Party" must make for a tedious read. In this table, are given the most important dates and events in the history of the BJP.


1951 The RSS grew political teeth and wings; the Bhartiya Jana Sangh is founded under the leadership of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee in 1951.
1965 Deendhayal Upadhyaya delivers four lectures on Integral Humanism
1967 "...you could travel from Amritsar to Calcutta without setting foot in Congress territory"
1967 The Calicut Sessions of the BJS held under Upadhyaya
1971 BJS adopts the slogan "War on Poverty"
1971 The Congress Party uses the Hindi version of "War on poverty" after stealing the slogan from the BJS and sweeps the polls(!).
1972 The Congress Party uses the stolen slogan to sweep the polls again(!!!).
1980 BJS rechristened, the Bharatiya Janata Party formed, Vajpayee presides over meetings
1989 "...the Janata Dal effected adjustments of seats with the BJP and proceeded to form the Government with outside support from the BJP and the Communists"
1992 Kar-sevaks demolish Babri Masjid, Ayodhya
1995 BJP wins 40 seats in the Karnataka elections
1997 BJP forms a 18-party coalition and comes to power at the Centre
1999 BJP heads the 18-party coalition at the Centre
